Two years ago I redecorated my oldest daughter's room for her 13th birthday. Warning, the pictures in this post were taken before I ever started blogging. So they look like real life, with cords showing, teenage knick knacks, and who knows what. She picked the color scheme... hot pink, black and white. Her bedroom is upstairs, so most people that come to the house don't see it, so I figured why not let her have the bright colors. I can always paint over (with lots and lots and lots of coats). We painted big horizontal black and white bands on the top of the walls and the lower walls hot pink. In this picture you can see her desk area. The magazine holder is an old one I had that I painted white. As you can see, her large closet has mirrored doors. Not so much my favorite thing. But, as it turns out, a favorite pastime of teenage girls is looking at themselves in the mirror, so it works out okay. The desk used to belong to my grandmother, the wood desk chair was a very good price from Target, and the rug was a steal at about $35 on clearance.
Here's the upholstered headboard that I made for her bed. I started with plywood, drilled holes where I wanted the tufting to be, then covered the whole thing with batting. I covered the batting with muslin, then finished with the satin. I used fishing line to sew the buttons on so that I could really pull them tight. There are large staples on the back that I tied the fishing line to. She has a nice black and white duvet cover that matches her shams, but she likes to put this pink thing over the top. Go figure. Those red pillows were also her doing, not mine. Just so you know.
In this picture you can see the upholstered...ummm...boxy thing that goes over the top of the window. Must be some official decorating term for that, but I don't know it! Anyhoo, my mom made that. She used the same fabric to make a slipcover for my daughter's bean bag chair and appliqued a big pink daisy to it. The chandelier was a clearance deal from WalMart for about $15. The lacy looking shades don't really go with the rest of the room, but they came with the house and I've been too lazy to change them.

In this picture you see the "art" above her dresser (which was a hand me down from hubby's aunt). I made the "art" by taking a picture of one of the big silk gerber daisies that sit next to her bed then messing with it on the computer. This is a great way to make cheap, modern art.
Hope you have a super fab day!

What a precious teenagers room! You both did a fabulous job...the little "box" over the window is a cornice ...and your mom did a great job on it.
Thanks for the mention of my giveaway...Good luck in the drawing...

What a great room. I love the paint job on the walls- even the very bright pink! My daughter wants her walls pink, but I just don't have the energy to clear out her room to paint. :o/ LOVE the headboard and your idea for original artwork!! That may be my next blogger steal!
Hi Mrs. B :)
I think her room looks great! Annie would love it too. Right now she's going through a pastel thing, but this could change her mind ;) You and your mom are really talented!
Have a beautiful day...

rue

Your daughter's room is fantastic! It looks like it is right out of a magazine. Great job and I'm happy you let her "do her thing" too!

Psst... I gave you an award if you would like to accept it. You deserve it for your wonderful blog!
I love it! Very fun!!
I finally posted some of my goodies in their new homes!
I also put a question about my younger daughter's room...would love your advice!
I absolutely love you allowing her to do it in her choice of colors and style. the point is to let her be creative and no try to please an occasional friend who might see the room. Tweens and teens need to have their design and taste accepted not critiqued and tweaked to make a mom happy. Mom has the whole rest of the house to fuss over.
Wow ! the room looks great !
i'd have the same thing but it looks hard so I'll have to find another room idea ,
thnx 4 inspiration
Tanya :)
